Global Financing of Renewable Energy and Implications for South Africa
Michael T. Ekhart, Managing Director and Global Head of Environmental Finance & Sustainability, Citibank, Inc.

Worldwide financing of renewable energy continues to grow, with a 30% increase from 2009 to 2010.  Over 50% of annual additions are in the developing countries.  Cost of capital continues at a historically low level.  All of these trends are in South Africa's favor.  What South Africa must do to be successful in renewable energy is set a public policy framework and stick to it for several years.  Citi has experience around the world in financing projects in wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, and biomass, and in raising capital for the renewable energy companies in the private and public capital markets.

On the Road to Renewable Energy; What can the CFO do today?
Simon Carpenter, Director of Strategic Initiatives, SAP

It is an ineluctable fact that we must accelerate the adoption of renewable energy. It is not alarmist to say that with the global population rising to 9 billion by 2050 and with finite natural resources nearing depletion the survival of human society as we know it depends on it. Despite the annual doubling of solar energy supply and advances of other renewables we are still a long way from being independent of coal, oil and gas. There is an urgent need to change organisational behaviours now in order to curb resource consumption and reduce emissions today. This presentation will examine the way the CFO’s role is changing to support a growing focus on the many aspects of sustainability
